City Art Tour: Sculpture Walk

Enjoy a guided tour through the City of Sydney’s public art collection and discover City Art’s most loved and best hidden public artworks.

Cameron Stead, a charming third year BFA painting student at the National Art School, invites you to join him on an informative City Art Public Art walking tour that focuses on a dynamic selection of artworks in the public domain located between Taylor Square and Circular Quay.  Cameron’s walking tour commences in Taylor Square with Reko Rennie’s colourful wall painting Always was, always will be (2012) on the T2 building, at the intersection of Flinders and Campbell Streets, Darlinghurst. The tour proceeds to the nearby Mary Place where Mikala Dwyer’s site-specific work Lamp for Mary (2011), a deeply personal piece,  commemorates a violent incident and serves to remind us all of the fragility of life.

The tour proceeds down Oxford Street into Hyde Park, past the ANZAC Memorial, to Tony Albert’s Yininmadyemi Thou didst let fall (2014) a major artwork acknowledging Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander service men and women.  Through leafy Hyde Park the tour proceeds to Macquarie Street and Martin Place, Chifley Square, Angel Place into the City’s business centre, encompassing numerous, important City of Sydney artworks in the public domain. En route, Cameron will also offer insights on major, recently commissioned artworks by Australian James Angus and renowned US artist Jenny Holzer.  The tour concludes at Circular Quay with Windlines, the scout compass of discovery  (2011) by Jennifer Turpin and Michaelie Crawford and a discussion on The City of Forking Paths by Canadian artists George Bures Miller and Janet Cardiff, available from Customs’ House.
